In need of a quick lunch in the neighborhood, I stopped into Golden Grain Restaurant last week. When I spotted the liquor license notice, I asked the sole front of the house staff if the original owner was still cooking here. She said that he was still there but would probably complete the sale by the end of the month. He's planning to take some time off, a break from being a restaurant owner. Before opening this spot more than 10 years ago, he had owned Tai San in San Francisco.
I'd had in mind the homemade fish balls in jook, but they were already sold out for the day. So, I tried the XO sauce seafood chow fun, $8.50. Not greasy, and pretty good quality chewy rice noodles with a kiss of the wok. The thick slices of half-raw onions were clumsy and the seafood was mostly chunks of fish. The XO sauce was near non-existent.
Like most of these neighborhood Cantonese places with huge menus, there are probably just a few dishes that shine. I didn't order it. In case some of you have favorites here, check in soon for the last time.
