When my 4th of July weekend visitors wanted a dunk in the Russian River, I dropped them off at Veterans Memorial Beach in Healdsburg after brunch with a promise to fetch them in a couple hours.

But soon a text came in that they were walking into town for a snack and needed to know where to meet. I answered back with the names of the new spots in town. But no, the guys insisted on Mexican and I pointed them to Taqueria Guadalajara not far from the beach.
Had something happened at the park or was there a problem in the water to make them cut short their swim time? Not at all. They liked the beach. Then they described being surrounded by multiple Latino families cooking chickens and carne asada over mesquite fires and being bathed in the scent of delicious grilled meats from every direction. Even though we had our own grill fest planned for dinner, that heady aroma drove them off the beach in search of tacos!
Taqueria Guadalajara delivered on the goods starting with excellent chips with the two signature salsas --- roasted tomato and chipotle salsa roja and tomatillo and avocado salsa verde. The three men scarfed down tacos, burritos and tostadas loaded with carne asada, carnitas and pollo asado with much gusto, and washed them down with aguas frescas and Mexican Cokes.

I bought a half-pint of the red salsa, $2, to take home for our Santa Maria tri-tip dinner. Taqueria Guadalajara's as good as ever. And as an added bonus, one can stroll over to the neighboring Karla's Ice Cream to get a paleta or cone after a meal.
