I was in Hayward Saturday morning, and looked up Padi's website thinking I'd stop by the Berkeley location if it had something suitable for August's dish of the month. That's when I learned about the new San Leandro store, so I headed over.
I didn't have time to linger so ordered both of my selections to go, handing over my own containers to fill.
Baso kampung, $8.95/quart - This had about a dozen large meatballs with some braised greens, rings of shallots, and just a little beef broth around the edges. I liked the flavor, but the meatballs had quite a bit of gristle ground into them for some extra crunch-chewiness that did not appeal to me. I noticed that this item is not on the Berkeley online menu.
Terong belado, $7.95/pint - Sweet Chinese eggplant were braised until tender and bathed in a tomato-chili sauce. The serving was much more than a pint, including about six (!) eggplant as well as a separate side of steamed jasmine rice topped with fried shallots. I ordered this "medium" and it was plenty spicy for me.
The Sunday breakfast looked interesting too. What are the two dishes you tried?
I asked the cashier how this location differs from Berkeley. She said that San Leandro is a little larger and is not open for lunch during the week. She also said that it's not serving dessert yet.
There's a big parking lot too though street parking seems easy on this stretch.
