We were in Healdsburg last October and had a wonderful time.. Here are some of my notes from the trip: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/918595#8353983 I would highly recommend the lunch / tasting at Arista. What Chalk Hill does best (IMHO) is Chardonnay, but like most high end Chard's it is oaked so it might not be to your taste. Another to consider for Dry Creek Valley is Lambert Bridge. Not sure when you are heading there, but I was surprised when I tried to make winery appointments a week or two in advance and learned I needed for some to really have done a month or so in advance... be forewarned!

Wedding cake/cupcakes in East Bay Area?

I haven't done it myself, but I would check the Asian and Hispanic bakeries for cakes in your price range. They often don't do fondant, or fancy decorated buttercream cakes, but I really like, for example, the whipped cream and fruit cakes from the Chinese bakeries. Just yelping it you may want to look into Delicieuse (but I personally haven't gotten a wedding cake from them).

Monterey Abalone Co. sells to some high-end local restaurants such as Coi, Saison, Michael Mina, and Commis. You can order from them directly: http://montereyabalone.com/SalesOrder.htm

Considering that for the price of 1 bun and 1 slice of duck at Yank Sing, one could instead get roughly 4 buns and 4 slices of braised pork belly at Hong Kong Lounge 2, one has to wonder ;)

Lotus of Siam's is a great list: wines you want to drink when you are in that house; at prices that don't turn your head; a selection that brings a smile as you consider it. And, you can do "a Bern's" -- we declare a theme and order accordingly, regardless what's for dinner: someone's birthday year, Barolo, St. Julien . . .

Anyone been to The BBQ Spot in Santa Rosa?

Late to the thread (as usual)... but I've found the BBQ Spot to be pretty sad as well. For decent BBQ in the area we usually hit up BBQ Smokehouse over in Sebastopol or (don't cringe) the Roadhouse BBQ in the Graton Casino if we don't want to drive to Sebastopol. Pack Jack's has been hit or miss since their reopening... never had a chance to try it before it closed up the first time. One word of warning though... the place in the casino isn't always consistent with their quality. Actually, we ate their tonight (food court) and enjoyed a half-dozen dry rubbed chicken wings. They paired nicely with a few veggie tacos from the Mexican joint there. And a side of tempura green beans for dessert.

They are on track to open in November of this year. They had numerous issues with permits but now it appears things will go smooth. Staff is being hired now.

We came here for dim sum yesterday. Food was good. No bamboo shoot fillers (or less) in the shrimp dumplings. The shrimp was pretty big size in a few of the dishes. Food came out hot. Xiao Long Bao was teeny tiny but there's a nice broth inside it. We did not order the sichuan food. The prices were at least $10+ for each dish and they don't have set dinners. It does not taste like KL dim sum. It's better than KL's.

Yogurt is easy to make. Look on the home cooking board for instructions. As for where to shop, it depends a lot on where you live. This board covers the entire nine Bay Area Counties, thousands of square miles (6,984, to be exact). Within that area, the shopping possibilities vary tremendously.

At least as far as Japanese food is concerned, nyc is very strong (reasons have been discussed elsewhere on this board)

The Nachbaurs ARE really great people. Their Allegria Vineyard is over 100 years old. I was told, can't recall by whom, that Dave Rafanelli was born in a house on the property when his family owned it. If you wind up in Santa Rosa, there's a small 'wine ghetto' off Piner Road, on Coffey Lane. Carol Shelton is there, along with Inspiration and a few others worthy of visits. . One thing for sure. You'll run out of time long before we all run out of recommendations.

Ippuku - Izakaya in Berkeley

That depends on what you want. If all you want is yakitori, then Ippuku is pretty good for that. If you want upscale non-sushi Japanese, then I prefer the food at Yuzuki Japanese Eatery. The styles aren't really the same as Yuzuki is mostly refined kyoryori, but I think they execute at a much higher level than Ippuku. Yuzuki arguably has a better sake selection also.
