You should try the "Khari Biscuit" from this store. It's very nice. You can eat them as it is. but it's tastes even better when you microwave them for 10-15 seconds and let it cool down before you eat. - Umang

If you click on the "sfgate.com/......" link in the fourth line of this tweet, https://twitter.com/ElTakeItEasy/status/516995660655370240 you should be able to get the full text of John Birdsall's well-written recent article, "Jalisco-style specialities at tiny Taqueria Campos in Oakland" which touches on the Jalisco roots and traditions of much of the Bay Area's Mexican cooking and its staying power. "Campos is great in the way of tradition keepers, cooks who never vary a method, adjusting to time and changing ingredients but keeping the outcome the same. It’s the tradition of women, farmhouse cooks, preservers of culture. I ate my first bowl of birria at Taqueria Campos in 2006, and it’s as good in exactly the same way now as it was then, and in the five bowls I’ve had in between," he wrote. The photo below is captioned, "Ana Maria Campos rubs the tough skins off the hominy by hand in the red menudo at her tiny Taqueria Campos restaurant in Oakland. I totally disagree. The bus system here is great. Of course work commutes are much of the focus, but there are so many routes that crisscross the city making it easy to get almost anywhere. Specifically, you are in GG park and want to get to the Mission? #33 will take you there.

There is so much good pinot noir in that area. The nice thing about Dutton-Goldfield is that its pinot noirs are among the very best and the winery makes a range of excellent whites too (no oaky chardonnay). Nothing special about the setting, but it's not far from Merry Edwards. To do something quite different, I'd go to Swan. The place is very lowkey oldschool and the wines are idiosyncratic and full of character. For zinfandel, the Seghesio tasting room is always very pleasant. Rosenblum is also an excellent choice in Healdsburg: 18 Matheson Street, Healdsburg, CA 95448 Mon-Thur, 12-6. Fri-Sun, 11-7

I wouldn't go there for the food. Beer selection is similar to Perdition though not as many taps. Great place on a warm day.

I gave it a try two weeks ago. The complimentary peanuts tinged with star anise and brown sugar are wonderful, the pao cai, not so much. https://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/15170095499/ Starting with the cold dish, mouthwatering chicken (not sure how its listed on the menu), $8.95. I had wondered why it was pricier than the other cold appetizers, and soon found out that its a half-chicken. Poached to tenderness and still red at the bone, the chicken bathed in garlicky and mala spicy sauce was as salivating as any. https://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/15170159840/ House cold noodles, $6.95, was presented attractively on a red glass plate. When asked how spicy I wanted this, I requested just a little. This went way beyond that to incendiary. Noodles had nice chew but I couldn't eat much of it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/15356858985/ Final dish was cumin lamb, $11.95, and a quite different version than I've had elsewhere. This had no chiles and the cumin seed was whole rather than ground. I liked the lack of grit. Whole seed made for some intense bites of cumin flavor and extra fragrance amplified by the aromatic cilantro leaves. The lamb was shaved thin and tender, but lacking the searing I would prefer. The dish had a minimum of "filler". The onions were cooked on point to bring out their natural sweetness yet retain juicy crunch. This was a terrific stir-fry. At 7pm, there was only one other party in the place. https://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/15170282738/

Nanking Beef is like crack. So good. I just throw the yams out, problem solved. I used to eat there all the time in the early 90's. It was awesome. I recently went back for the first time in over 20 years for the Nanking Beef and found it to still be awesome.

Pupusas : SFBA Dish of the Month September 2014

I tried some pupusas at Los Cocos in Oakland (Fruitvale Ave and 14th St). I ordered a revueltas and a loroco. They came out not terribly crispy, but browned on the outside, and slightly less done than I'd like on the inside. The revueltas filling was one of the more flavorfull I've had in recent memory, however, with plenty of pork flavor in the bean/cheese mix. The curtido was quite crunchy, with what I perceived to be a vinegar note (rather than fermented) and plenty of picked onions. The hot sauce was a fully pureed tomato salsa in a squeeze bottle. Overall I wasn't too excited, though I've never been a huge fan of pupusas. My favorite part of the meal was the tamarindo agua fresca I got, after being told they were out of coco and ensalada. It wasn't too sweet and was ade with real tamarind pulp.
