I'm a HUGE fan of the corned beef hash at Griddle Fresh on 24th in Noe Valley. Everything about the dish is fantastic. It comes with a large portion of corned beef hash, two poached eggs with a wasabi dill holandaise sauce, cottage fries and toast. The hash is mostly corned beef, which is succulent and flavorful after 6 hours of cooking, but also comes with potatoes and peppers. The eggs are poached perfectly. The cottage fries are very good, but overkill. I often substitute them for a side of fruit. It is hands down the best corned beef hash that I've ever had. I had lunch there once and the food was terrible. It was badly executed and very dated Chinese-American food. I've had better Chinese food at PF Chang's. They won't be missed.

Thanks for the tip. It's a good cooking fermented chili paste; works well in Sichuan cooking like ma po tofu. Good salty-umami fermented chili flavor in contrast to non-fermented sauces.

I think it's less scene-y than the area around Trick Dog (in the mission), which has certainly gentrified a great deal. I don't think it's as uniform demographically as the Marina, either. But I haven't exactly looked at census figures to come to this conclusion. Visitors that I take to this area enjoy it, and it's closer to your target daytime destinations than the Mission too.

In one of my other posts I mentioned that Cole is roasted by Royal Coffee, actually I believe the roaster is McLaughlin coffee in Emeryville. Cole Coffee used to be called Royal Coffee before an ownership change.

You just need to go to Chinatown early (before 10am) and tell one of the butchers the size piece you want, with skin or not, with ribs or not, before the whole hogs that are delivered every day have been broken down completely. Otherwise the belly pieces are cut into 3" widths for the case. Price will be less than $3/pound. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/676619#5284873

I haven't been to the European market in a couple of years, but it was E. European and Russian. Well stocked, but not what OP requested. Real Doner in Petaluma used to have Turkish groceries. Has that changed since their remodel? I go to Kasra Market in Walnut Creek for those ingredients when in that region. In the distant past there was Haig's in SF. Don't know what replaced it there. Good luck! Let us know whether there're any restaurants serving these delectable foods in Sonoma County.

Any place one can buy Kouign Amann in SF?

Pamplemousse Patisserie in Redwood City has started offering Kouign-amann every so often (not every day). It's very respectable: good buttery flavor, nicely layered, while being lighter and less dense than others: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ssfire/15412815861/ However, it's missing the caramelized goo that's so addictive; I would say it's better than Starter Bakery, but not as good as Satura Cakes. Not worth a trip.

Anyone been to The BBQ Spot in Santa Rosa?

I've looked at the meats on display at the Roadhouse BBQ a few times now. Each time I've requested meat cut from a certain piece, and the cashier has told me that's not possible. So, no sale. There are clearly inferior pieces of meat in the case, but some looks like it could be decent if you could be guaranteed those slices.
